Internet Policy
To fulfill its mission of providing public access to information of all types in a wide range of formats. The library provides access to computers and Internet resources. The Internet offers many valuable local, national and international sources of information. However, some information found on the Internet may be inaccurate, incomplete, dated, or offensive to some individuals. Library patrons use it at their own risk. The library is not responsible for the content of the Internet, changes in content of the sources to which the library home pages link, or for the content of sources accessed through secondary links.

Library Internet Guidelines
To use the Internet, patrons must present a valid Cornwall Public Library card. The card must be clear of fines prior to the Internet session. Patrons who do not bring their cards will not be permitted to use the computer.

Use of the Internet:

  • Each session lasts for 60 minutes, including time required for printing and/or copying files. Please plan accordingly.
  • The Internet workstation(s) may be reserved for 60 minutes per week up to 7 days in advance. Otherwise it is first come, first serve. Latecomers may forfeit their reserved time if they are more than 15 minutes late.
  • There can be a maximum of 2 people at a workstation at one time.
  • Users must have basic computer skills, including the ability to use a mouse.
  • The Library recommends that patrons do not use their credit card to purchase items through the Internet using library computers.
  • Patrons may use Library computer equipment to check existing e-mail accounts.
  • Abuse of the computers or Internet access will result in immediate suspension of Internet access privileges.
  • Users may not:
    1. Use the network to make unauthorized entry into other computational, informational or communication services or resources.
    2. Distribute unsolicited advertising.
    3. Invade the privacy of others.
    4. Make any attempt to damage computer equipment or software.
    5. Engage in any activity that is harassing or defamatory.
    6. Use the Internet for any illegal activity, including violation of copyright or other rights of third parties, or in a manner inconsistent with the library's tax exempt status or its proper operation.
  • Violations may result in the loss of of access to the network, the computers and/or the library. Unlawful activities will be dealt with in an appropriate manor.

Public Users' Security
Users should be aware that the Internet and the library's wireless network are not secure mediums and that third parties may be able to obtain information regarding users' activities. Cornwall Public Library will not release information on the use of specific computer or Internet resources by members of the public except as required by law or necessary for the proper operation of the Library.

Staff Assistance
CPL staff is available to help in planning search strategies and answer questions to assist you in getting to the right place on the Internet. However, staff cannot provide in-depth training concerning the use of the Internet or personal computer use.
