Tears ‘n Tissues Film Program

Brief Encounter, starring Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson

Romantic film lovers will be able to enjoy a showing of David Lean’s acclaimed film, Brief Encounter. With its hauntingly fog-enshrouded setting, lush Rachmaninoff score, the film is underscored with a pair of remarkable performances by Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson. Based on the Noel Coward one-act play, Still Life, David Lean’s film deftly explores the thrill, pain, and tenderness of an illicit romance, and has influenced many a cinematic brief encounter since its release.

In 1946, the film won a shared Palme d’Or award at the Cannes Film Festival, and Celia Johnson won Best Actress at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards. The film went on to be nominated for 3 Academy Awards, including Celia Johnson for Best Actress in a Leading Role and David Lean for Best Director.
