The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America: Erik Larson: 9780375725609: Amazon.com: BooksJanuary Book Pick: Devil in the White City is a nonfiction book that chronicles two intertwined stories during the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago: that of Daniel Burnham, the Fair’s ambitious chief architect, and that of Dr.H.H. Holmes, a charismatic serial killer who used the event to lure unsuspecting victims to their deaths in his “Murder Castle” hotel. While Burnham struggled to realize his vision for the magnificent “White City” amidst numerous setbacks, Holmes, on the other hand, built a hotel with secret rooms, chutes, and a crematorium to facilitate his gruesome crimes, which went largely undetected during the Exposition.
